Conceptualized in a dream, "The Other World Lamp" fuses function and imagination, resulting in a piece that feels as if it has a life of its own.

"The Other World Lamp" begins as a slim vessel that is thrown on the wheel. Once leather hard, Shapiro drapes over 100 feet of extruded coils up and down the form to create the illusion of movement. The stoneware is then heavily glazed producing a running effect that fuses the coils together and strengthens the individual elements.

Affixed at the top of the sculpture is a glass globe that fits seamlessly with the silhouette of the ceramic body, bathing the coils in a warm glow and creating shadows that heighten it's lifelike impression.
